The Father’s Glory
Prayer to the Holy Spirit
O Holy Spirit of Divine Love, we love you, we praise you, we glorify you, we worship you, we adore you! O Holy Spirit, you are the Father’s gift, promised to us by Jesus (Acts 1: 4 -5) and poured forth on the world at Pentecost (Acts 2; Joel 2:28 – 29) Through you we are healed, sanctified, and transformed. Through you, we are made children of the Father, anointed, and transformed into perfect images of Jesus Christ so that it is no longer we who live but Jesus Christ who lives in us. Through you we say “Abba! Father!” Through you we proclaim “Jesus is Lord!” Through you we bear all things, believe all things, hope all things, endure all things. You are the love that never fails. You give us the peace that surpasses all understanding and the joy that is our strength. In you we live and move and have our being. In you we have perfect freedom. You are the anointing in which we dwell who teaches us all things. You are the one who speaks through us when we know not what to speak. You are the one who helps us in our weakness and prays through us when we know not how to pray. In you we bear fruit that gives glory to the Father. You are the river of living water that flows forth from our hearts. You are the fire that sets the world ablaze. You speak through us the praise that destroys the enemy and the avenger. Through you we work even mightier deeds than Jesus did, as he promised. Through you all things were created in wisdom. Through you the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. Through you we are cleansed, healed, forgiven, and delivered. Through you the Father’s glory is made known. Through you Jesus is revealed to us and through you he reveals us to ourselves. Through you we are brought into the eternal life of the Trinity. It is you who spoke through the prophets, apostles, and teachers. Through you the Gospel was proclaimed. Through you the martyrs gave their lives in joy. Through you the saints worked miracles, healed the sick, raised the dead, spoke in many languages, and cast out demons. You are the providence of the Father and in you we lack no good thing.
O God, our God! Most tender, most gentle, most sweet, most loving, most merciful! You desire our hearts, O Holy Spirit, to be your dwelling place! You love us with an infinite love and you desire us to know and love you in the perfect union of God! Most infinitely creative God, there is nothing impossible for you!
In you our humanity is fulfilled, O you who knit us together in our mother’s wombs and knew us before we were even created. You have a plan for us, for a future and a hope beyond what the heart of man has ever conceived! You are the one who gives each the gifts needed to fulfill the Father’s will. You have made us little less than the angels and put all things under our feet. You have commanded us to fill the earth and subdue it.
O Holy Spirit, our most beloved one! Come! With Mary, your spouse, the most Holy Mother of God, we say “Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done unto me according to your will.” Holy Spirit, come! Come upon us as you did on her at the Incarnation and on every day of her life. Holy Spirit, come! Come upon us as you did upon Jesus and his baptism in the Jordan, the Son in whom the Father is well pleased. Holy Spirit, come! Come upon us as you did on the Church at Pentecost. Holy Spirit, come! Come upon us as you did upon the prophets, apostles, martyrs, teachers, evangelists, miracle workers, and all the saints. Holy Spirit, come! Come make your home in us. Holy Spirit, come with your water! Come with your fire! Come with your light! Come with your love! Come with your power! Come with your glory!
God our Father, you promised that you would give the Holy Spirit to those who ask. Fulfill your promise this day and give us the gift of the Holy Spirit in full measure that you may be glorified and we may be the children in whom you are well pleased. Jesus, you promised to send us the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, who would teach us all things. You said you desire to set the world ablaze. Set it ablaze now! You commanded us to proclaim the good news to all the world. You commanded us to love one another as you have loved us. You promised to work mighty deeds through all those who believe. Come, Jesus! Fulfill your promise now in this hour and do not delay so that we may fulfill your command forever and for eternity.
We bow before you, O God, in humble repentance because we know you are a merciful and loving God and you desire mercy and not sacrifice. A humble and contrite spirit you will not despise but you look with compassion on our weakness. We repent this day of our sins against you. We repent of our deafness to you. We repent of our blindness, fear, unbelief, selfishness and pride that has prevented us from receiving your love and allowing you to work through us the way you desire. We bow in complete and humble submission before you, most patient and gentle God, and we beg of you to exchange our hearts of stone with the heart of Divine flesh, who poured you forth upon the world in his eternal mercy.
With Mary and all the saints, we come before the throne of God, and with the entire heavenly court as our witnesses, we surrender ourselves to you O Holy Spirit, without reserve this day, from henceforth and forevermore. We surrender to you our intellect and will, our spirits, souls and bodies, our time and spaces, our speech, our senses, all our faculties, our entire lives and beings, our prayers, our works, our relationships, our vocations, our desires, all our gifts, our past, present, future, our belongings, our waking, our sleeping, our walking, eating, drinking and dressing, even our laughter and our tears, even our music and dancing so that we may become like little children and enter into the kingdom of heaven. Freely have we received, and freely do we give all to you, you who made all things. All belongs to you now, most loving and powerful Holy Spirit. Come now and fulfill every promise made of you throughout history! Fulfill them now, this day in us. Renew us, transform us, bring new life, new meaning, new purpose, new understanding. In your light, we see light. Bring the fulfillment of our beings, the fulfillment of God’s plan for us. Most Holy One, with you nothing is impossible. Unleash upon us the floodwaters of the Holy Spirit and the unquenchable fire of Divine Love. Open to us the Scriptures and a thirst for the things of God. Open to us the meaning and graces of the Sacraments and teachings of the Church. Open to us the meaning of creation and you yourself flood through all created things. Fill us with all your gifts and fruits, and fill every human gift with your power and fruitfulness. From now on, use us and all that belongs to us in your way, for your purpose and in your time that God may be glorified and his will done on earth as it is in heaven. Bring everything in our lives into the Divine order. Give us the fullness of life that Jesus came to give us. Work, speak, act, pray and love through us at every moment. Fill us always with the rejoicing and praise that opens heavens and defeats our enemies.
O Holy Spirit, we repent this day of not knowing you sufficiently and not seeking you sufficiently, you who desire us with an eternal desire. Bring us into the eternal life of the Trinity, you who are the blaze of love that pours itself out in eternal gift, you who are the union of the Father and Son. Come now and live this in us! We no longer lean on our own understanding, but instead fill us with the thoughts that are your thoughts, the ways that are your ways, and a new vision that is yours so that we may not perish for lack of knowledge. Open our hearing to the still small voice that is you, and our eyes to your vision that we may know you and obey you. Come in a cleansing, healing flood through us, through every wound, every dark, sick, broken, or sinful place in us that we may be worthy vessels. Come Holy Spirit! Bring down the walls of Jericho that the land may be yours! Come Holy Spirit, rout our enemies that you may be glorified. Come Spirit of boldness and the perfect love that casts out all fear, we are yours! Come, you whose presence in my life is the will of the Father, come now and fulfill His will in us for now and for eternity.
O God, our God! Great are you, O Lord! Great are you, O Lord! Great are you, O Lord! Worthy are you! We adore you! We love you! We worship you! We praise you!
Come Holy Spirit! Come through Mary!
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit! Amen! Amen! Amen!
